The Chair 2021

This series of photographs was made in front of my parents’ house. In Chinese culture, a chair can symbolize power, authority, and the role of the decision maker. Women have often been constrained by the expectation that marriage means joining and being shaped by a new family. Although society has changed significantly since I was born in 1998. I have grown up within a family structure like this and continues to shape my life.

These photographs are not intended to challenge patriarchy directly. Instead, they honour my mother. I want to honour her labour, her resilience, and the care she holds within our family.
